To activate a Spectrum modem, connect the coax cable and power cord, wait for the Online light to turn solid, then go to spectrum.net/selfinstall or open the My Spectrum app and sign in. Spectrum detects the modem on your account and provisions it in a few minutes. If you are activating a modem you bought rather than one Spectrum shipped, you may need to register its MAC address first. This guide covers both cases, plus the eMTA modem used for Spectrum Voice phone service and the fixes when activation stalls.
Key Takeaways
- Activation is self-serve at spectrum.net/selfinstall or in the My Spectrum app. Calling 833-267-6094 is the fallback, not the first step.
- Do not start activation until the modem's Online light is solid. A blinking light means the modem has not reached Spectrum's network yet, and no amount of activating fixes that.
- A customer-owned modem must be on Spectrum's approved list and must be DOCSIS 3.1. Spectrum has announced it will stop supporting DOCSIS 3.0 modems after October 28, 2026.
- Spectrum Voice requires Spectrum's own eMTA modem. Customer-owned modems cannot carry phone service.
Looking for router setup instead?
This guide covers getting the modem provisioned on Spectrum's network. If the modem is already online and you need to connect a router, join WiFi, or change the network name and password, see How to Set Up a Spectrum Router.
What You Need Before You Start
- Your Spectrum sign-in. The username and password for your Spectrum account, or the account number and phone number on the account if you have not created a login yet.
- The modem's MAC address. A 12-character code on the modem's label, sometimes marked CM MAC, CMAC, or HFC MAC. Spectrum-shipped modems are already tied to your account; you only need this for a modem you bought.
- A coax cable and an active cable outlet. The outlet has to be live on Spectrum's side. An outlet that has not carried service in over a year may need a technician.
- An Ethernet cable and a phone, tablet, or laptop to reach the activation page.
Step 1: Connect the Modem
- Coax. Screw one end onto the wall outlet and the other onto the modem's Cable port. Hand-tight at both ends. If a splitter sits between the wall and the modem, bypass it for activation and add it back later; a splitter is the most common reason a modem never comes online.
- Power. Plug the adapter into the modem and then into a wall outlet rather than a power strip.
- Wait for the Online light. The modem scans for Spectrum's signal, downloads its configuration, and registers. The Online light blinks during this and turns solid when done, blue on current Spectrum modems. Allow 2 to 5 minutes, up to 20 on a brand-new outlet.
If the light is still blinking after 20 minutes, skip ahead to the troubleshooting section. Activation will fail until this light is solid.
Step 2: Activate the Modem
Option A: spectrum.net/selfinstall or the My Spectrum app
- Connect a phone or laptop to the modem. Use an Ethernet cable directly into the modem, or connect through a router that is plugged into the modem. Turn off mobile data on a phone so the request comes through the modem.
- Open a browser and go to spectrum.net/selfinstall, or open the My Spectrum app. Older Spectrum instructions point to activate.spectrum.net; use spectrum.net/selfinstall if that address does not load.
- Sign in. The page lists the equipment on your account that is waiting for activation.
- Select the modem and follow the prompts. Spectrum sends the provisioning signal, the modem may reboot once, and the page confirms when it is online. This takes 5 to 15 minutes.
Option B: By phone
Call Spectrum at 833-267-6094, say you need to activate a modem, and have the MAC address ready. The agent adds the modem to your account and sends the signal while you are on the line. Use this route if the self-install page does not show your modem, which is common with customer-owned units on a first activation.
Activating a Modem You Bought
The steps are the same, with two extra checks. First, the modem must be on Spectrum's approved list for your speed tier; Spectrum will not provision a modem that is not listed. Our Spectrum approved modem list covers every current model by plan. Second, it must be DOCSIS 3.1. DOCSIS 3.0 modems are still listed today, but Spectrum has said it will stop supporting them after October 28, 2026, so do not activate one now.
When the self-install page does not show a customer-owned modem, that means Spectrum has not linked the MAC address to your account yet. Call the number above with the MAC address, and the agent registers it. If the modem came from another cable provider, that provider may need to release it from their system before Spectrum can provision it; the previous owner or provider has to make that call.
Once activated, the modem handles internet only. Pair it with your own router and Spectrum's $10 per month Advanced WiFi charge goes away on the Advantage and Premier plans.
Step 3: Test the Connection
Plug a laptop into the modem's Ethernet port and load any website, then run a speed test. Wired at the modem is the cleanest measurement: if that number matches your plan, the modem and the line are fine, and anything slower over WiFi is a router or placement issue. If it is well below the plan, the line or the provisioning is the problem, and Spectrum can check signal levels remotely.

How to Activate a Spectrum Phone Modem (eMTA)
Spectrum Voice customers receive an eMTA (Embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapter) instead of a standard modem. It carries internet and phone service in one unit and has one or two RJ-11 ports on the back labeled Voice 1 and Voice 2. Spectrum does not provision phone service on customer-owned modems, so the eMTA has to be Spectrum's.
- Connect the coax cable from the wall outlet to the Cable port.
- Connect the Ethernet cable from the Ethernet port to your router, or to a laptop for activation.
- Plug a standard phone cord into Voice 1. Use Voice 2 only if you have a second line.
- Connect the power adapter. If Spectrum supplied a battery backup, connect it to the Battery port; it keeps phone service alive during a power outage but does not power your router, so internet still drops.
- Wait for the Online light to turn solid, then watch for the Voice light. A solid Voice light means phone service is provisioned.
- Activate using either method above. Internet and phone activate together.
- Pick up the handset and listen for a dial tone, then place a test call.
Troubleshooting Spectrum Modem Activation
The Online light will not stop blinking
The modem cannot reach Spectrum's network. Reseat the coax at both ends and check the center pin is straight. Remove any splitter. Try a different outlet if the home has one. If it still blinks after 20 minutes at a second outlet, the line into the house or the outlet itself is inactive, and only a technician can fix that.
The activation page does not load
Confirm the device is on the modem's connection and not mobile data. Type spectrum.net/selfinstall directly into the address bar. If the page loads but says there is nothing to activate, the modem is not on your account; see the next item.
Spectrum does not recognize the modem
For a customer-owned modem, this means the MAC address is not registered to your account. Call 833-267-6094 with the MAC address and the agent adds it. If the modem is not on the approved list, or is DOCSIS 3.0, the agent will refuse it; check the approved list before you call.
Modem shows "Network Access Denied"
The modem reached Spectrum's network but Spectrum has not authorized it. This happens with modems that were flagged or quarantined under a previous account. Spectrum support can clear the hold and resend the provisioning signal.
Internet works but the phone has no dial tone
Check that the Voice light is solid. If it is off, Voice has not been provisioned on your account yet; Spectrum can push it remotely. Also confirm the phone cord is in a Voice port and not the Ethernet port, which is slightly wider and easy to mistake.
Everything looks right but there is still no internet
Restart the modem and then the router, in that order, and give each a full minute. Our modem and router light guide decodes every Spectrum light pattern if something other than the Online light is misbehaving.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to activate a Spectrum modem?
About 5 minutes to connect it, up to 20 minutes for the Online light, and 5 to 15 minutes for activation. Most people are online within half an hour.
Can I activate a Spectrum modem without a computer?
Yes. The My Spectrum app on a phone or tablet runs the same activation flow, and the phone option needs no device at all.
Does Spectrum charge to activate a modem?
Self-installation and online activation are free, and Spectrum's standard modem has no monthly charge. Professional installation is a one-time fee of roughly $65 to $70 depending on market.
Can I use my own modem with Spectrum?
Yes, as long as it is on Spectrum's approved list, matches your speed tier, and is DOCSIS 3.1. Spectrum registers the MAC address on your account and it activates like any other modem. Phone service is the exception; Spectrum Voice requires Spectrum's eMTA.
Do I need a router after the modem is activated?
Yes. Spectrum's standard modem has no WiFi. Rent Spectrum's Advanced WiFi router for $10 per month on the Advantage and Premier plans, or connect any router you own to the modem's Ethernet port. Our Spectrum router setup guide covers the connection and WiFi settings.
I was a Time Warner Cable or Charter customer. Is activation different?
No. Both brands became Spectrum, and the equipment, activation page, and support number are the same. If you still have Time Warner or Charter era equipment, it is likely DOCSIS 3.0 and should be replaced before the October 28, 2026 cutoff.
